Altius successfully completes the transport and installation of a 227-ton transformer in Dublin

Last week, the Altius Projects team successfully completed a complex international logistics operation connecting China and Ireland, reaffirming our specialization in project cargo transport.

The operation consisted of moving a 227-ton transformer, accompanied by 52 additional components, totaling 53 packages and over 323 tons in total weight. The cargo was loaded at the Port of Taicang (China) bound for the Port of Dublin aboard the vessel MV PAULA, following an exhaustive supervision process at the origin.

Final delivery was completed on Friday, July 3, with the on-site unloading, thus concluding an operation that required meticulous coordination, advance planning, and precise execution in each of its phases.

This project is a clear example of the type of operations that define Altius: large-scale logistical challenges where every detail counts and where experience, anticipation, and teamwork are key to success.

Behind this achievement is a joint effort by numerous teams that, once again, have demonstrated their ability to make the complex possible and deliver the extraordinary to its destination.

Altius has successfully completed the Huelva FORCE (HU4) project, which consisted of the transportation of 40 units – 6,400 cbm and 925 tons, including 6 heavy lift units (Cold box and Exchanger) with maximum unit dimensions of 31 meters long, 6.15 meters wide, 6 meters high and weighing 184 tons. The cargo was shipped from a private dock in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, to the Port of Huelva, Spain.

The most significant milestone of the operation was the transport of the heaviest unit ever moved across the Rio Tinto Bridge, reaching final transport dimensions of 91.54 meters long, 6.15 meters wide and 7 meters high, with a total weight of 350 tons.

The road transport distance from the port to the final delivery site was approximately 10 kilometers. However, due to the extraordinary dimensions of the transport convoy, extensive and close coordination was necessary with all authorities involved: port terminal, traffic, port police and highway department, to facilitate the departure of the convoy from the port and block traffic in both directions, avoiding critical height restrictions.

The biggest challenge of the project was the crossing of the bridge over the Tinto River, which presents structural particularities and a significant weight limitation due to its year of construction. After a thorough coordination with all parties involved -client, port authority, engineering, transport company and ALTIUS- it was possible to define a suitable and feasible transport configuration that complied with all the restrictions of the bridge. It was necessary to build 2 additional 14-meter transport girders for a correct weight distribution during the transfer. Measurement of the bridge deflection before, during and after the special transport was also organized to guarantee and verify the safety and structural integrity of the bridge, obtaining favorable results. In addition, work was carried out on the median of the road to allow for the passage of the transport in the opposite direction. All the necessary improvements and signaling were implemented in accordance with the requirements of the local authorities.

Due to internal plant constraints, it was not possible to reach the final delivery position inside the plant with the equipment used for the main road transport. Therefore, it was necessary to set up a transshipment area near the main access and to organize the reloading of the 5 critical units on Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMT), equipped with 2 6-axle units and a PowerPack. This transshipment area was prepared by Altius and the transport company.

New phase completed in the transportation of a 196-ton transformer to the Valle Solar plant.

Altius has completed the second phase of the transportation of a 196-ton transformer to the Valle Solar Photovoltaic Plant. After its arrival by sea from Shanghai to the port of Valencia, the cargo was transported by rail to Almansa and then moved by road in different stages to the substation in Ayora. One of the sections required a night operation with total traffic cut-off due to its technical complexity.

For installation, a gantry was used to unload the transformer onto a shoring system that allowed it to be accurately positioned on its foundation. Once in place, the operation was completed by crawling.

This type of logistics project requires a high level of planning and technical coordination.

Altius completes the transport of the record cargo that crossed the Rio Tinto Bridge in Huelva

We have completed the “Huelva FORCE – HU4” project, which involved the transportation of 40 units – 6,400 cbm and 925 tons – including 6 heavy lift units (Cold box and Exchanger) with maximum unit dimensions of 31 meters long, 6.15 meters wide, 6 meters high and 184 tons in weight, from Ras Al Khaimah (United Arab Emirates) to the Port of Huelva (Spain).
This transport was part of the modernization of an air separation plant in Huelva, a key project to improve the plant’s efficiency and capacity.

One of the project’s most notable milestones was the delivery of the main unit, with a transport convoy 91.54 meters long, 6.15 meters wide, 7 meters high and weighing 350 tons – the heaviest load ever to cross the Rio Tinto Bridge.

The operation required exceptional coordination with port authorities, police escorts, engineering teams and specialized transport configurations (including SPMTs). Key infrastructure adaptations were made to ensure safe passage, both on public roads and within the client’s premises.

Altius successfully completes the transport of a 280-tonne deethanizer column from Brazil to Argentina

Altius has carried out the transport of a deethanizer column 50 meters long by 6.5 meters in diameter and weighing 280 tons from Santos, Brazil, to Bahía Blanca, Argentina. The operation was carried out at the Patagonia del Norte dock, Argentina, where the ship docked and the tandem unloading was performed by the ship’s cranes, after a previous inspection of the equipment. Due to the length of the column, it had to be rotated to allow passage between the cranes. The unloading operations were completed successfully, meeting the highest standards of safety and efficiency.

Transport with precision: 1,300-ton STS crane for Termavi

We share with you the video of the complex and successful transport we carried out for Termavi: the transfer of a 1,300 ton STS Super-Post-Panamax crane from the Port of Tarragona to the Port of Vigo.

This turnkey project included structural reinforcements, RO-RO operations with 84 SPMT shafts, marine transportation aboard the MV Zhong Ren 121 and complete supervision in all phases of the operation.

Key maneuvers included turning the crane 90 degrees to optimize loading and pre-assembling the lashing system to minimize time on deck. Despite the total load reaching 1,900 tons, all operations were carried out safely and smoothly.

We have shipped two 154-ton transformers from China to the Quillagua solar photovoltaic plant, located in the Atacama Desert, Chile. This plant stands out as a hybrid facility that combines renewable energy with an advanced energy storage system.

One of the main challenges of this project was that Quillagua is located at the top of a hill, which forced us to traverse slopes of up to 15% over low-grip terrain.

This type of logistics operation requires meticulous planning and a high level of coordination. At Altius, we are proud to have successfully accomplished this complex task.

Transport of 5 catamaran molds with a total weight of 30 tons

Altius completed the transport operation of 5 catamaran molds, weighing a total of over 30 tons, from the port of Antalya, Turkey, to the shipyard in Alicante, Spain.
Due to their dimensions, road transport from the commercial port to the shipyard for two of the molds was not feasible, so we proposed a solution based on a non-self-propelled modular pontoon, avoiding the need to split the units. During the planning and engineering stage, our scope included supplying the Maritime Authority with the requested stability study of the pontoon and a towing study based on an official tugboat, which addressed the extreme draft restrictions for accessing the shipyard. The two towing trips were carried out on the same day, ensuring efficient delivery to the shipyard.
Despite the challenges, we always seek innovative and efficient solutions to overcome any obstacles.
